The boy knelt, his head drooping as the rain poured over him. His fine kimono was drenched. His long hair had fallen from its topknot. The spectators had all gone back into the city. None had remained to console the defeated samurai. All he knew was gone. He had lost the match. He had lost his father, his mother, and now, his sensei. Thunder cracked above him as another torrent of rain washed over him. Only then did he see the figure standing across the field.
